Yes, you there. I see you. You can put your hand down. Were people outraged? Sure. Were congressmen pissed off? Absolutely! Did landmark new legislation come around as a result? You betcha.
So did executives and companies really listen?
This is a great article that tries to answer that questions from an ethics prism. But one can conclude that the warnings we were given in 2001 were tragically ignored until 2008. It's a great, disturbing, frustrating read, but an important one.
Is our corporate society irretrievable? Has the go-go mantra of the 80's and the unfettered growth of technology and markets in the 90's and this decade led to a permanent rewrite of our country's economic DNA - saying that making a profit is only secondary to building a brand and an idea at the expense of stockholders?
To me, it proves yet another slab has been removed from the foundation of America.
