Dear Rush,
So I see you're hoping and wishing and praying that the new president fails. Now, I listen to you on occasion, generally when I'm on my way to work or coming home early. And I have to say I agree with some of what you say. I am a very moderate Republican who shares certain Democratic beliefs.
But this time, what you wish for may destroy the country you so claim to love and protect.
Consider the hope and the dreams of this country that are united behind this man right now. Look at our problems - a terrible economy, getting worse due to fear and mistrust as well as anything; two wars that are using a significant part of our armed forces; a general feeling of distrust and hopelessness about the ability of our government to be even somewhat less than totally corrupt (see: Blagojevich, R., fall of) and you want to sit behind your ivory studio and proclaim that you hope he fails?
Come on, Rush. You know as well as I do what will happen if Obama fails:
- The country's will and spirit will plummet - the 'if not him, who?' reaction, adding to our woes - many of which are due to confidence in our nation's systems of economy (or lack of)
- Depending on the level of 'failure' an African-American will not become president for a very long time, and may negatively impact other's efforts to bring about change in government
- America's foreign power, both practical and symbolic, will continue to wane, while others in the world (EU? Russia? Far East? China?) will be more than happy to fill the void
- The cascade of America's economy, especially if imports decline much farther due to lack of demand, will create a worldwide crisis far worse than has been seen thus far
- Our military may have to be cut back significantly to prop up other areas of our economy, leading to perceptions of weakness
- Our seniors who put much into investments and 401(k)'s will be unable to retire, forcing them to work harder and longer than they ever envisioned, potentially causing the health care system to wobble as it is forced to care for elderly workers that had no business working themselves into ill health or perhaps work-related accidents
- The 'brand name' of America, and what it stands for, will be tarnished, perhaps irrevocably in the eyes of the world, and the global human talent that once risked everything to add to the fabric of our nation may no longer feel the pull to do so
Like surviving the Great Depression of 2010.
